History of Savannah Mustang Club

1989: The Savannah Mustang Club began with the first meetings in a restaurant meeting room, put together by John Wilson and Philip Neidlinger. They and 30 other members helped form the club in next few meetings by creating the structure for our Constitution, enlisting officers, establishing a logo, and essentially designing our purpose and theme. During our second year we also united with the Mustang Club of America and became a Regional Mustang Club associate. The First President was Jim Carroll from Tampa, Florida he was in Savannah on a special work project but had the most experience in working with Mustang clubs prior. We became incorporated with the help of Curtis Lewis in 1991.

Originally monthly meetings were set up on the 3rd Thursday of month and we had a Cruise in at McDonalds across from Savannah Mall on the 3rd Saturday of the month. The first show was in the Savannah Crossings shopping center where 16 year old Trevor McLean (he can still wear the original t-shirt today) and his dad were still putting his car together during the show. We did parades, visited other shows, had picnics and sent out a monthly newsletter to every member (our biggest expense). It was a new family of great people and great cars. A few years later the running horse logo was changed to run toward the West, since there wasn’t much real estate for it run East from Savannah!

2021: We have 135 paid members this year. Today we have 57 years of Mustangs to display, we are also a Mustang & Ford club, and the old past of the newsletter editor has turned into a media manager…We have this Web site, Facebook SMC page and a SMC Group Facebook page (just click the “f” in our header and you can go there!).

There are now two main shows a year, a Spring Open show and Fall Mustang/Ford MCA show. We are still the Regional Mustang Club of America associate club.
